The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was established with the support of the G8 to dramatically increase resources to fight three of the world's most devastating diseases, and to direct those resources to areas of greatest need. The Global Fund is a unique and innovative funding mechanism which directs funds quickly to technically sound programs in developing countries.
The Global Fund is an independent Swiss Foundation, governed by an international Board that consists of representatives of donor and recipient governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector and foundations. Also acting in an ex-officio capacity are representatives of the World Health Organization (WHO), UNAIDS, and the World Bank.
In the years since its creation in January 2002 the Global Fund has made rapid progress. After four funding rounds, the Global Fund has committed US$ 3 billion to 310 grants in 128 countries. The Global Fund is supported by a range of international donors – including over 40 countries, as well as foundations and private donors. To date, over US$ 5 billion has been pledged through 2008.
It is anticipated that over five years, program achievements will include:
More than 1.6 million people on antiretrovirals, a six-fold increase over current coverage in developing countries;
